Queer Cyprus Association to hold an Informative Session on Sexual Exploitation and Human Trafficking. 

(Nicosia, 14/11/19) Within the scope of the LGBTI+ in Freedom from Exploitation, LIFE Project, which is funded by the European Union under the Together Against Trafficking in Human Beings Grant Scheme and implemented by Queer Cyprus Association in cooperation with KAOS-GL, an information session on LGBTI + Sexual Exploitation and Human Trafficking will be held for Queer Cyprus members, supporters and platform stakeholders. Information session will take place on Saturday, 23 November, between 10:00 and 14:30 at EU Infopoint, Nicosia.

The Life Project gave a start by stating that, “Where Lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex and beyond (LGBTI+) will be free from exploitation in Cyprus”. The “LGBTI+ in freedom from Exploitation (LIFE) Project” aims to contribute to the struggle of LGBTI+s who are trafficked in the northern part of Cyprus. The LIFE Project, started on May 2019 and will last for two and a half years.

The Informative Session on LGBTI + Sexual Exploitation and Trafficking in Human Beings will be held on Saturday, November 23 in two stages.The first half of the informative session, Assist. Professor Dr. Neva Övünç Öztürk will provide information on basic concepts of human trafficking. Lawyer Faika Deniz Pasha from Cyprus will explain and illustrate the current situation of human trafficking in Cyprus. In the second half of the informative session, Assists. Professor Dr. Neva Övünç Öztürk will focus on the legal framework for the identification of victims of trafficking. The informative session will be concluded by introducing legal determinations in the light of international conventions and in particular the case law of European Court of Human Rights.

 

Project Coordinator Doğukan Gümüşatam stated that the informative session is open to all members and supporters of the association and emphasized the importance of a coordinated approach to the fight against human trafficking.

 

The information session will be provided to Queer Cyprus members, supporters and anti-trafficking platform stakeholders. Since there will be a limited number of participants in the session, participants who wish to register are kindly requested to email queercyprus@gmail.com by Thursday 21 November at the latest.
