Booklet on the Legal Gender Recognition and the Right to Access the Gender Affirmation Process in the northern part of Cyprus
In the northern part of Cyprus, many trans people experience problems in their daily lives because the legal gender on their identity documents does not match their gender identity. Many experiences, including applying for a job, traveling, opening a bank account, or complaining about a violation at local institutions, are likely to result in harassment, unfounded skepticism and even violence.
The Queer Cyprus Association strives to ensure that everyone in the northern part of Cyprus can have their name and gender changed in official documents without any interference. Queer Cyprus advocates for fast, accessible and transparent procedures based on the respect for the principle of self-determination access to gender-affirming reassignment treatments and medical care; recognition of non-binary identities; access to these rights not only by adults but also by minors; and the guarantee of confidentiality within these contexts.
This booklet aims to shed light on the existing rules and procedures in the northern part of Cyprus and the rights violations they have created, to explain the changes that need to be made, and in this context, to develop ways of standing together against myths nurtured by the fear and stereotypes in society.
Our hope is that soon this booklet will lose its validity and we reach a time when such a study will not be needed.
