The world, our region, and Cyprus are passing through an increasingly oppressive wave of war, violence, and hate. LGBTI+ community are also facing escalating attacks on human rights and fundamental freedoms and their agencies. Over the past year, we have clearly seen the systematic growth of violence, discrimination, and hate, as well as how LGBTI+ rights have been targeted both in our region and across the globe.
Regressive and oppressive policies targeting LGBTI+ rights are being forcefully imposed worldwide, and the human rights struggle is under threat from fascist and authoritarian structures. Additionally, expanding war and occupation policies disregard our demands for peace and justice, dragging millions of lives into devastation.
In various parts of the world, authoritarian regimes and far-right politics are threatening our humanity and our right to live together.
For these reasons, the May 17 Pride March holds greater significance than ever this year! This march, one of the strongest ways to defend human rights, peace, and freedoms, symbolizes solidarity and struggle that unite us. Against those who disregard us, try to usurp our rights, and impose war and oppression, we are here and will continue to shout out our existence!
This year’s Pride March is not just a celebration but also a fight for existence. It is a call to resist fear and oppression, defend our lives, and raise our voices together. This march is our response to those who try to isolate us, intimidate us, and seize our rights. Therefore, we must reach more people and build stronger solidarity.
To organize the May 17 Pride March together, our first meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 25 at 5:30 PM at the Human Rights House. We invite everyone to join this meeting, make decisions together, and grow our solidarity!
Organizations and individuals wishing to participate can contact us via info@queercyprus.org or the Solidarity Line at +90 542 858 58 47.
