Curriculum Gap Analysis in The Context of LGBTI+ Inclusivity Report

The Rainbow Project, funded by the European Union under the Civil Society in Action VII Grant Programme and implemented by the Queer Cyprus Association, aims to promote LGBTI+ inclusivity in the education and healthcare sectors in the northern part of Cyprus. In this context, the research titled “Curriculum Gap Analysis in The Context of LGBTI+ Inclusivity in the northern part of Cyprus” contains important data and evaluates how gender equality and LGBTI+ issues are covered in the education curriculum.

The Content and Scope of the Research

This research aimed to evaluate the textbooks used at primary, secondary and high school levels in the northern part of Cyprus from the perspective of LGBTI+ awareness and gender equality. In this study, which was carried out using the content analysis method, all textbooks used in primary, secondary and high schools in the northern part of Cyprus constituted the population, while the sample selection was limited to 48 textbooks, taking into account expert opinions. The research was conducted by expert Yasemin Taneri and research consultant Çağrı Peköz. Damla Kodan, Kayra Gutan, Raşit Kutlu and Yassine Chagh took part in the data collection phase.

The introduction section of the report focuses on research on education and LGBTI+ in the international literature and provides detailed information about the impact of unsafe school environments on LGBTI+s, the importance of safe school environments and the scope of the study. The second part is method-oriented and contains information about the population, sample, data analysis process and book analysis results. The third section focuses on the content analysis findings of textbooks at primary, secondary and high school levels under various categories. In the fourth section, the results obtained for textbooks at primary, secondary and high school levels are included. In the fifth and last chapter, a summary of the research is presented and suggestions for schools, curricula and education programmes, teachers, non-governmental organizations and future studies are offered.
