(July 8th,2025, Nicosia) – As part of the Helix Project, Queer Cyprus Association is organizing a panel titled “Intersecting Crises, Intersecting Identities: LGBTI+ Experiences During the COVID-19 Period.”
According to a statement from Queer Cyprus, the panel will take place on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM, at the Cyprus Turkish Civil Servants Trade Union (KTAMS), 50th Anniversary Conference Hall.
During the panel, the findings of an academic study conducted within the Helix Project—funded by the European Union under the Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community and implemented by Queer Cyprus Association—will be shared with the public for the first time by Prof. Dr. Şenel Hüsnü Raman and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pelin Karakuş Akalın. The research examined the social, economic, and psychological impacts of the pandemic and the subsequent economic crisis on LGBTI+ individuals living in the northern part of Cyprus.
Another speaker, Asst. Prof. Dr. Jorge Júlio de Carvalho Valadas Gato from Portugal, will offer regional perspectives on the challenges faced by LGBTI+ communities in Europe and Central Asia during the pandemic. This will allow local data to be assessed alongside international experiences.
Through the panel, in addition to publicly presenting the research findings concerning northern part of Cyprus, the aim is to create a solution-oriented discussion platform with the participation of civil society representatives, decision-makers, and members of the media.
Participation is free of charge, and simultaneous interpretation in Turkish and English will be provided. Interested participants are expected to register with Queer Cyprus Association by July 14, 2025.
